Mt. Asahidake Ropeway & Ski Area

At 2,290 metres, Mt. Asahidake represents the highest peak in Hokkaido and offers some of the best backcountry skiing in the country. Due to its northern latitude location, Mt. Asahidake has a similar alpine environment to the 3,000 metre-plus mountains found on the main island of Honshu. The mountain is accessed by a single tram and provides a number of groomed runs as well as a great variety of off-piste terrain where one can find some of the deepest powder snow around.

The superb location commands excellent views of the other mountains in the Daisetsuzan Mountain Range as well as the city of Asahikawa below. A few short steps from Sugatami Ropeway Station places you in a powder snow covered alpine meadow high above the cloud zone.

Recently, Mt. Asahidake has received ample international attention due to the fact the mountain is a live volcano and allows skiers the opportunity to ski by its smoking vents.
