Mt. Tokachidake & the Taisetsuzan Mountain Range

Looking across the valley from the Furano Ski Area on a clear day, one will see the prominent Taisetsuzan Mountain Range and a beautiful spiral of smoke extending into the sky. This is produced by the live volcano Mt. Tokachidake which together with the Taisetsuzan Mountain Range helps form the largest National Park in Japan.

This area is a year-round playground for locals, with the mountains’ pristine natural assets creating an incredible environment for mountain climbing, hiking, backcountry skiing and snowboarding and snowshoeing. The area is known for its stunning natural settings that include flowers, rivers, natural hot springs, amazing autumn foliage, smoking volcanoes and wildlife such as bears, deer, and an array of birds.

The area also boasts a number of hot springs with minerals which are proven to be beneficial for the body, joints, and skin. Some hotels and Japanese style lodges have their own private onsen, including Shirogane Park Hills, Ryounkaku, (the highest point in Hokkaido reachable by car), Barden Onsen Kamifurano and Kamihoroso Onsen. Please see the accommodation section for more information.

A number of local companies take tours to these areas and provide guests with expert knowledge to ensure a safe and unforgettable experience.
