Located in a Japanese city, the Furano Ski Resort offers skiers and riders the opportunity to not only enjoy great snow, but also experience traditional Japanese culture and interact with the local people.
The well organised Furano Tourism Association opens its doors daily to assist visitors and also puts on regular events throughout the winter, most of which are free to attend. The events include weekly cultural performances during the peak season, where visitors can listen to live traditional music and try on a kimono.
Regular theatrical performances and local art galleries also offer a glimpse into the world of Japanese arts. A quaint arts and crafts village is located in a wooded area next one of the major hotels
where magical strolls can be had along a boardwalk path lit by Christmas lights.
Tours of the local cheese factory and winery are popular indoor activities and making your own cheese, butter, or ice cream can provide a fun filled experience for the whole family.
For those wishing to remain outdoors, a number of recreational companies offer snowmobiling, snow rafting, snow shoeing, and hot air balloon rides.
Furano has over 100 restaurants and bars with everything ranging from small cafés, and cottages in the woods, to stone built restaurants and open fire charcoal BBQ restaurants. Winter highlights include two ice dome bars in the Kitanomine Zone as well as a barbecue area where barbecued lamb, a specialty of Hokkaido, can be enjoyed inside the shelter of an igloo.
